Further History / Information >>

Cradley Forge Methodist Church, built in 1928, is situated at the end of a small cul-de-sac in Hammer Bank, overlooking the river Stour.  This building is the third church to bear this name.  The original church was built where John Wesley once preached, the site where the Wagon & Horses public house now stands.

In 1850 a second church was built on the opposite side of the road to accommodate the increase in worshippers.

This church once again became too small to hold both Sunday School scholars and adults and a larger building became necessary, to be built at Hammer Bank.

After this work began the local Authority decided that a road widening scheme was needed  and this required the demolition of the 1850’s church.

Unable to finance a new church and separate Sunday School it was decided that the new building would serve a dual purpose.  This was in large part funded by the formation of an Amateur Operatic Society.

Before the council road widening scheme could be carried out the second world war intervened causing a very long delay.

The actual road scheme finally began in the early 1980’s and meanwhile the move to the new church building had been made.  In the process of the road works a huge landslip occurred and caused massive problems to the church structure.

This created long drawn out meetings with council surveyors and loss adjusters etc.   Eventually the church received compensation through the diligence of church members.

This sum of money plus donations and many fund raising events by church members and friends was used to repair the damage so enabling us to still worship in our church.
